Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Offer Mohamed Salah Reduced Wage Deal
According to a report out of Egypt, negotiations have been difficult with the club’s proposed multi-year extension for the superstar involving a lowered wage.
With January nearly done, Liverpool’s multiple worrying contract situations for key stars Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold appear no closer to being resolved and every day that passes sees fan worries tick up a notch.
So far there has been little by way of solid information to go by regarding the details of how—or if—the situation is progressing for any, but this week brings a report out of Egypt claiming the difficulty in Salah’s case comes down to the question of term vs. wage.
According to Masrawy, Liverpool have offered Salah a one-year extension for the upcoming 2025-26 matching his current terms—but if the player wants at least a two-year deal, which is said to be his preference, the club’s proposal would be for a wage reduction.
Salah is said to have rejected that choice, seeing neither option as suitable and seeking at least a two-year deal matching his current terms. Given his current form and assuming the rumour is at all accurate seems like a very low bar to clear for Liverpool.
Still, it would be foolish to trust the report without further confirmation, and it does feel a little as though it might be a case of old news making its way through another channel rather than a reflection of the current state of contract negotiations.
