Virgil Van Dijk Says There’s No Time To Dwell

The disappointing 2-2 draw at Goodison was not the result anyone wanted.

After the long wait, the season’s final Merseyside Derby came as a disappointment for Liverpool. The first placed Liverpool dropped two points at the death to the 16th placed Everton. This was their game in hand, so it now puts them seven points ahead of Arsenal. They fumbled the chance to go nine points clear and regain some momentum after their FA Cup loss.

It would be easy to dwell on the frustration of conceding a late goal, but captain Virgil van Dijk offered his teammates the next 12 hours or so to be mad.

“I think the feeling right now is obviously disappointment, that’s pretty obvious, and it will be for today and tonight. But from tomorrow we focus on Wolves and we try to get the three points then and so on and so on,” he said.

“We all know that we have a lot of games up until the international break so there is no point to dwell too much on this result. We wanted to win here, we could have won here, maybe we should have won here. But it is what it is – we take it and move on.”

There are four more games to see out February before the players can get some rest. All four are league games, including the return fixture against Manchester City. It will be an important run of games as we head into the final stretch of the season. The last thing they need is to let a failure like Wednesday’s bleed into their subsequent performances. As van Dijk said, the turnaround to play Wolves is only four days.

Arne Slot’s team has shown they have the mentality necessary to bounce back. Though there have been very few missteps from the team this season, they’ve always moved on quickly.
