Virgil van Dijk Insists Liverpool “Will Bounce Back” After Tough Week

Liverpool are out of the Champions League and put in a terrible performance in the League Cup final. Now it’s time to refocus on the Premier League title.
Liverpool are poised for a coronation procession en route to their 20th English league title over the final nine games of their 2024-25 season, but despite that the past week has been a difficult one with defeats in the Champions League and League Cup final.
Following a mid-week departure in the Round of 16 for a Liverpool side that at times looked unable to keep up with an energetic Paris Saint-Germain, the Reds turned in a tired, lifeless performance against Newcastle on Sunday. Now, the goal is to bounce back.
“It’s been a difficult and disappointing week for us,” captain Virgil van Dijk said on social media. “It’s very hard for me to put it into words right now, [the] only thing I can say is that we want to bounce back and we will! See you after the international break.”
Even if the past week represents where this Liverpool side are going into the final two months of the season—talented but tired, a core group of trusted starters arguably having been given too much work and too many minutes—it should be enough.
Such is the current gap between first and second that even a stumbling Liverpool and perfection from chasers Arsenal might not be enough to change the outcome—and it’s hard to imagine this injury-hit Arsenal side even coming close to perfection.
Still, bouncing back and putting an exclamation mark on the year with a potential 90+ point finish would certainly be more enjoyable for all involved than a nervous and narrowing race to the finish line even if Liverpool seem fated to end up first regardless.
