Goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel thinks star stopper Alisson Becker wants to continue with Reds despite arrival of new goalkeeper in summer.

Last summer, Liverpool surprised many by signing rising star Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia on a delayed deal, with the 24-year-old remaining at the Spanish club for the 2024-25 season but expected to join up full time the following off-season.

The surprise came from the fact that in Alisson Becker, the Reds arguably already had the best goalkeeper in football under contract through the summer of 2027. And according to friend, compatriot, and coach Cláudio Taffarel the Brazilian stopper still sees his future at Liverpool Football Club.

“He wants to continue living this story,” Taffarel told ESPN Brazil. “I saw the wave of stories about Saudi Arabia coming with great opportunities and high offers, but he always says, ‘I want to continue this story, I owe a lot to them, and I want to continue my life here.’

“The club made that decision a year ago, the purchase of a young player maybe a little for the future. But Alisson is a guy who is still at a very high level. And even at his age—with his experience, with his desire—it will be very difficult for someone to come here and replace him.”

Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation is oddly uncertain, with everyone agreeing Alisson isn’t anywhere close to done at the top level, Mamardashvili set to arrive, and expectations second choice Caoimhin Kelleher will push to depart in search of a starting job.

In the meantime, Mamardashvili appears too good to willingly move to England to sit on the bench as Alisson’s backup. It’s led to some speculation a season on loan at another club in England could be on the cards for Mamardashvili regardless what happens on the Kelleher front.

What seems clearest, is Alisson is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world. And that he has two years still to run on his current Liverpool contract. If he wants to continue living this story with the Reds, it’s hard to imagine anything changing on that front.
