If Liverpool allow Konaté to head into the final year of his contract they could lose the French international on a free to Madrid in 2026.

Liverpool are set to lose star right back Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer this summer after the local, club trained 26-year-old defender chose to run down his contract and join the Reds’ chief European tormentors of recent seasons.

Now, they could be facing a similar situation in 2026, with reports out of Spain claiming that Madrid are keeping a close eye on 25-year-old centre half Ibrahima Konaté, whose current Liverpool contract is set to expire following the 2025-26 season.

At least that’s how Marca see it, with the Madrid-mouthpiece listing Konaté and Arsenal’s William Saliba—whose deal expires a year later in 2027—as top targets should their current clubs allow them to run down their contracts a la Alexander-Arnold.

For Liverpool, it will perhaps serve as reminder of the importance of getting Konaté on a new deal before next season kicks off. And if the player is unwilling to commit, it may be a buyer will have to be found now to avoid losing him for nothing.

If that’s the situation, there is currently no suggestion Madrid would consider a fee for the player—and if they buy a centre half this summer, it would likely be Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen—but Paris Saint-Germain have been rumoured interested.
