It feels like only yesterday that Liverpool were celebrating becoming Premier League champions and preparing for a summer that would seem them consensus first time winners of the prestigious Transfer Window Trophy thanks to a pair of club record signings in Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

Neither’s career in Red has perhaps gone quite as hoped, though Wirtz has found form in the second half of the season an increasingly looks the consensus top young German attacker he was billed at following a few standout seasons at Leverkusen. As for Isak, there’s at least good news on the recovery front.

“Alex has been on the pitch now, not with his football shoes but with his running shoes, for the first time,” head coach Arne Slot confirmed this week when asked about his 26-year-old Sweden international striker who suffered a fractured leg against Tottenham at the start of December and has been out since.

“That will still take a while before he is ready to play for us, but I think it’s nice for him to go on the pitch and it’s nice for us to see him there. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but the next step is doing work with the ball, which every player likes most, and then the next step is going into the group.”

Slot added that ideally Isak will be in full team training by the end of March which means the player could even, if all goes to plan, see the pitch around then or in the first weeks of April and be involved over the final month to six weeks of the 2025-26 season as Liverpool push for Champions League qualification.
