Your Transfer Rumor Is Bullshit: £70M For The Other Luis Suarez
Liverpool are not shy about splashing the cash, if and when truly outstanding players come onto the market. Florian Wirtz, Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson Becker are all great examples of this. Liverpool are also not opposed to bringing in older, more experienced players if the price is right, for example James Milner and Thiago Alcantara.
However, one thing that Liverpool have absolutely not done in recent years is splash the cash for an attacking player nearing their 30’s with precisely one outstanding season under their belts.
Regardless, this is not stopping the rumor mongers from linking Luis Suarez—a demonstrably less bitey and hopefully less racist one than the former Liverpool player—with a move to Anfield.
The 28-year-old Colombian striker has lit it up at Sporting this season, scoring 24 league goals in 25 appearances, and 33 across all competitions. However, this is the first time Suarz scored double-digit league goals playing in any first division (he scored 27 with Almería in the Secunda Division in Spain last year).
So, you can hardly say that Suarez has a history of producing incredible attacking numbers year-in and year-out. And at 28-years-old, it’s more likely that this season will be a high-water mark in his career than a stepping stone to more goals and more success at one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
It is also worth looking at the player who Suarez replaced: Arsenal striker (?) Viktor Gyökeres. Gyökeres had 39 league goals—and 54 in all comps—for Sporting last year before making the switch the Premier League. He has 11 league goals this campaign.
So, this doesn’t seem like the kind of tranfer Liverpool have pursued, or indeed should pursue. But at least we can have a bit of fun with the fact that he shares a name with that bitey striker that did outrageous things at Anfield for 2.5 seasons.
