Tribunal Set Chelsea Compensation for Liverpool’s Ngumoha Signing
Having signed young winger Rio Ngumoha out of the Chelsea academy back in the summer of 2024, it’s been 18 months now waiting on the tribunal to rule on just what the Reds would owe to London’s Blues for the standout young talent and today that ruling has dropped.
In total, the most Liverpool could end up paying would be £6.8M, though a full £4M of the sum is made up of add-ons based on senior appearances, senior England appearances, and extending his Liverpool contract with only a £2.8M fee guaranteed for the now 17-year-old.
Chelsea also receive 20% of any future profit if Ngumoha is sold, making that potentially the must lucrative part of a realtively compensation package. Liverpool’s most recent major signing that went to tribunal, that of Harvey Elliott, saw a £4.3M package with £1.5M up front.
In England, tribunal rulings on players signed from another club’s academy attempt to set a fee closer to market value in order to stop the richest clubs indiscriminately poaching young talent and to ensure smaller clubs are able to continue to invest in their youth academies.
This often results in fees in the hundreds of thousands and, occasionally, running into multiple millions. By comparison, for moves between federations UEFA only sets out compensation of £10-90k per year of training based on the category of the buying club.
