After a slow start to life in England, 22-year-old German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz has showed signs of finding his feet in recent months and has started to become the key player everyone assumed the club was getting when he signed from Bayer Leverkusen last summer in a £100M+ deal.

However, a recent back injury has meant Wirtz has been absent for the last two matches, missing outings against first Nottingham Forest and then West Ham over the last two weekends. Now, with the Reds preparing for a pair of road games against Wolves, manager Arne Slot doesn’t sound hopeful of getting him right back.

“It’s not anything different,” Slot noted ahead of the Tuesday’s league game. “Tomorrow will probably come too soon and maybe the game at the weekend as well, but let’s see how that ends up and we hope to have him back sometime next week. Maybe earlier, maybe a bit later, but that’s the timescale.”

Liverpool face a rare Tuesday night Premier League tie against Wolves before turning right around and playing the relegation favourites again on Friday evening, with the second game in the FA Cup and both of this week’s matches to be played on the road at Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton.

Next week, Liverpool have their first match of the Champions League knockouts when they head to Istanbul to take on Galatasaray in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie. Then it’s Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday the 15th before Galatasaray visit Anfield the following Wednesday for round two.
