In a piece for The Guardian about Liverpool FC’s appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach, Andy Hunter also discussed the club’s recruitment priorities this offseason.

In summary:

  • Wingers were a priority before Arne Slot’s departure, and finding replacements for Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz are still top of mind for the summer
  • As reported, Yan Diomande of Leipzig is a leading target, although the Bundesliga club are reluctant to sell the 19-year-old, and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen.
  • A new right-back is also considered important, with Conor Bradley recovering from a serious knee injury and Hunter stating that Jeremie Frimpong is viewed as more of a back-up option.
  • An experienced central defender and a midfielder could also be added to the squad, but are considered lower on the to-do list than the above. Player sales or market opportunities could result in signings in those spots arriving later in the window.

These additions are pretty much expected after the season Liverpool have had, but it remains to be seen whether Liverpool plan to make more signings to help the squad cope with the demands of a switch back to a high-octane pressing style. That issue could also be solved if Iraola does actually utilise more Academy players.
