Adam Lallana Sent Off For Violent Conduct In Liverpool U23s Match

The mending midfield star received a deserved three-game ban which will not apply to first team matches.

Hardly the comeback from his recent injury that he will have been hoping to make, midfielder Adam Lallana, making his debut in the Liverpool U23s’ match against Tottenham U23s, got sent off the pitch with a deserved red card after attacking a teenage Tottenham player. While this resulted in a three match ban from Premier League 2, it will not affect him in the the first team.

The incident appeared to begin in the 62nd minute when Lallana and 19-year-old George Marsh slammed into one another. Lallana took issue with the heavy challenge and immediately attacked the Spurs player. He came up from behind and grabbed him with an arm around the neck, pulling the teenager into a chokehold. He was quickly pulled away by teammate Danny Ings, but not before the damage was done.

“I’ve never seen Adam react like that,” said under-23 manager Neil Critchley after the game.

It was about as clear a straight red card as one can get. Lallana’s actions were unacceptable and rash and well-deserving of at least a three-game suspension. It would be fair to say that he lost his damn mind for a minute there.

He’s very lucky that this infraction won’t apply to the first team, so Klopp is still free to choose him, if he sees fit.
