Jürgen Klopp Positive He Won’t Still Be Managing Liverpool in 2038

He’s got no plans on leaving any time soon, but the Liverpool manager says 20 more years might be a bit much.

Jürgen Klopp isn’t planning on leaving Liverpool any time soon, but he knows that the day will come when he does—that unlike managers like Arsene Wenger or Alex Ferguson, he hasn’t got it in himself to stick it out for 20 or 30 years.

Some of that is simply down to Klopp himself; his personality and the knowledge that even the best football relationships can have a shelf life. Some, though, is down to watching the news cycle speed up and reactionary criticism pick up in recent years.

“No way, no chance,” Klopp told the BBC when asked if he could see still being Liverpool’s manager 20 years from now—in 2038. “I respect Arsene and Sir Alex a lot for what they did for football, but the game has changed a lot.

“I think the first 15 years for these two guys were like a holiday compared to what they had in the last 15 years of their job. The social media thing—I’m 50 and young in all things of life, but I’m too old for this.”

Some Liverpool fans will be hoping Klopp sees the kind of success at Liverpool that will keep him around for as long as Wenger or Ferguson, but the reality is that it’s always been difficult to have that kind of longevity in the game.

And it’s true, too, that much like one-club players, that kind of longevity is becoming rarer by the year. Still, even if Klopp isn’t still on Merseyside in 2038, that leaves a lot of football to look forward to between now and whenever he does move on.

“In 20 years’ time, then I am 70 and I can guarantee that I won’t be here,” he added. “It’s such a good moment we shouldn’t draw this dark picture for all the Liverpool fans that they have to deal with me for the next 20 years! Let’s stay positive!”
