Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Suffer Blow In Pursuit Of Napoli Star
The player’s agent has appeared to pour cold water on the Reds’ transfer hopes, saying his client is happy in Naples
After a strong run of transfer successes in recent seasons, JĂĽrgen Klopp and the Reds have received a blow in their pursuit of their rumoured #1 target. Napoli star, Jorginho has been a standout performer during the club’s strongest challenge for the Serie A league title in years, earning the hard-nosed midfielder a host of admirers in the process.
The 26-year-old is said to be pursued by the biggest clubs on the continent, and with Emre Can halfway out of Anfield at the end of his contract this summer, as well as the likes of Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana still struggling for form after injury-ravaged campaigns, Jorginho has been mooted as the top priority on Klopp’s summer wish list.
Signs were pointing towards a move away from the coastal club, with another rumoured Liverpool target, Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira reported to have already agreed a deal to join Napoli as Jorginho’s replacement.
However, Jorginho’s agent, Joao Santos, has now come out to reject that narrative, instead claiming that his client is in fact reluctant to leave his current club:
“Torreira to Napoli? First off, I hope that Jorginho plays for the national side. If Torreira does arrive, then he will likely start as a sub,” Santos stated in an interview with Radio CRC.
“I don’t know what Napoli’s plan is but Jorginho doesn’t want to leave [Napoli manager, Maurizio] Sarri’s team.”
The Brazilian-born Italian international has risen to the fore this season, banging in four goals and as many assists from defensive midfield, while exhibiting the sort of combative, yet progressive steel and intelligence that Klopp will be looking to add to his squad in the summer. Hopefully, this setback is the nothing more than the standard agent tactic to bump up a transfer fee and that the Reds have a real shot signing at the rising star.
