Brighton Boss Hughton: De Bruyne “More Complete” Than Salah

As if Mohamed Salah didn’t have enough motivation ahead of the final match of the season.

Chris Hughton has done an exceptional job navigating the rough and tumble of the Premier League, guiding Brighton & Hove Albion to safety in their first year back in England’s top flight since 1982/83. As a reward, Hughton and the Seagulls get to end their season with successive trips to Manchester City and Liverpool. Good thing they wrapped up safety early.

Ahead of Brighton’s trip to City, Hughton was asked to compare the seasons of Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah.

“For me, De Bruyne’s the more complete player and I think it’s taken an exceptional season from Salah to win the awards ahead of De Bruyne,” Hughton said.

”The progress that De Bruyne has made in the last couple of seasons has been huge and the player that I think could play for any team in the world.

”But Salah’s been exceptional and I think it would be probably so unusual and unjust to take it away from him.

“To score that many goals in one season in the way that the game is now and how competitive the game is now, I think speaks volumes for the way Liverpool play and for him as an individual.

“Salah scores goals at will and I suppose it’s goals that make you lose games and, of course, win games so Salah’s probably more dangerous in that final third.”

Other sites seem to be hyping this as some sort of extraordinary claim, as opposed to a perfectly reasonable one from the Brighton boss. Of course you can quibble what is meant by “more complete.” De Bruyne and Salah play very different positions within their respective set ups, and for Klopp’s side Salah is quite “complete.”

Regardless, if Salah wants to use this as extra motivation to break the Premier League scoring record and fire Liverpool into a Champions League spot (and help us lift #6), that would be great.
