Klopp Talk: “What a Season” for Mo Salah

The manager is happy with his star man, but thinks there could be even more to come.

When people remember this season’s Liverpool side in twenty years’ time, there is one player in particular who will immediately come to mind: Mohamed Salah. Signed from AS Roma to the cries of “Chelsea reject”, the Egyptian has blown away even the greatest of expectations and become the highest ever Premier League goalscorer in a 38 game season. To call him a revelation would be an understatement.

Unsurprisingly, his manager is pleased with the attacker’s work.

“What a season”, Jürgen Klopp told the BBC’s Match of the Day about Mohamed Salah. “The player scored goals from different angles, different situations, and can improve so much.

While the thought that Salah could get even better is a frightening thought for every other Premier League club, the German did elaborate with some criticism of the Golden Boot winner.

“Today [against Brighton] in the first few minutes, [he] was not moving enough. [He] wanted the ball in the feet, and all these things. And then he changed the game, and then he can score.

“He will score in the future, 100%, so good for us, good for him”.

Talking about the Brighton game more generally, Klopp stated that his side “tried to win the game from the first second”. Even though one point from a draw would have been enough to secure a top 4 position, the manager admitted that “I have no real idea how to go for a point”, such is his style of football.

“We could’ve scored much more often, but I am happy that we didn’t, because that would not have been the right thing for Brighton today. They didn’t deserve that after their fantastic season”.

It was a perfect day for Liverpool, with an excellent performance and result being met by Mohamed Salah reaching 32 league goals and winning the official Premier League Golden Boot. It’s hard to imagine just how Salah could possibly manage to have a better season than this one, but his manager seems to think it can be done, and that is a very exciting prospect.
