Rumour Mongering: Pepe Reina to Choose Between AC Milan and Liverpool Return

The former Liverpool goalkeeper could soon be heading back to Anfield to back up Loris Karius.
With Loris Karius having a largely impressive 2018, there’s every chance this summer that Liverpool will stick with their current number one in goal and focus their finances on other areas of the pitch, with big signings expected in midfield and attack.
If that happens, though, there is still likely to be a need to bring in a backup, someone capable of stepping in should Karius pick up a knock and perhaps as well taking domestic cup duties. Queue a claim from Spain today that the club have one in mind.
Once and possibly future Liverpool shot stopper Pepe Reina has been lined up to arrive as Karius’ backup next season, at least according to Marca—who, if not totally reliable, are at least not as hideously unreliable as the likes of Diario Gol and Don Ballon.
They claim that the 35-year-old Reina, who is out of contract at Napoli this summer, will have to now choose between returning to Anfield or heading north in Italy to take a backup role at AC Milan, the side many had considered his most likely destination.
Reina is a goalkeeper few Liverpool fans will need an introduction to, and while his play at Napoli hasn’t matched his vintage Liverpool best, he has at least rebounded from his poor final years at Anfield and would make a quite capable backup.
If true, then, it would be hard to quibble with such a move, a return on the cheap for a fan favourite in the twilight of his career who could capably back up Karius for a season or two and allow the club to spend big elsewhere in the market.
