Harry Wilson Looks to Turn Hull City Success Into Liverpool Role

Having proven he can make a difference in The Championship, Wilson wants a squad role with the Reds next season.

Harry Wilson has been one of the best players in the Championship since his arrival at Hull City at the end January and was a big reason why that club ended the season eight points clear of the relegation places after a dire first half of the season.

In Wilson’s thirteen Championship appearances, Wolves won five times, with the winger scoring seven goals and four assists. In the Wolves’ 33 other league games, they won just six times. Now, he wants to prove he can make a similar impact back at Liverpool.

“It was the right decision for me,” Wilson told Goal of heading out to Hull on loan just before the close of the last transfer window. “I needed it, and I think the minutes I’ve played will be valuable for me, for pre-season and beyond.”

“This year, I want to get on that [pre-season] tour, I want to get in the manager’s mind, train hard, train well, stay fit. As a Liverpool fan, to see Salah and Mané scoring pretty much every game is great, but as a player, I want to be in that team.

“But I’d like to make myself that backup player for them, or that replacement if they have a knock or whatever. It sounds like a big aim, but why not? I want to play for Liverpool in the Premier League on a regular basis, I will never deny that.”

On Sunday against Chelsea, it certainly looked like Liverpool could have used him. The attacking trio appeared tired, exhausted after a season where they’ve started together nearly every game when fit. Wilson, on current form, would have helped.

And while it’s always a delicate balance between getting a young player playing time by sending them out on loan and working them in in a squad role, right now at least it seems a safe bet that Wilson will get the chance to claim such a role this summer.

A new signing who can play in the front three is almost certain—and Nabil Fekir is the name currently on fans’ lips—but there will be room for at least one more. If it is to be Wilson, a big part of the reason why will be his three months spent at Hull.

“I wanted to prove that I was able to do it,” Wilson added. “The manager told me he likes me as a player and I was involved in the training group at Melwood, but I wanted to go out and get some games. I felt I was ready and the manager agreed.”
