Hillsborough Inquest Moves Forward with Prosecutions

The quest for justice in the Hillsborough Tragedy moves forward as prosecutions of four key figures are set to move forward.

For the past 29 years, the families of 96 Liverpool fans have been searching for justice. Today, there is heartening news out of the courts for the families of The 96 as Sir Peter Openshaw has lifted the stay on the prosecution of David Duckenfield, allowing for the prosecutions of four key figures in the tragedy to move forward.

On April 15th, 1989, at an FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool Football Club and Nottingham Forest, a human crush resulted in the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans and injuries to over 700 more at the stadium. For decades, the family has sought answers and justice and this move marks one small step closer to seeing some form of resolution.

Per the official site, this decision means:

Graham Mackrell, former club secretary of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, is to face two charges for alleged breaches of safety legislation, while Donald Denton and Alan Foster, then of the South Yorkshire Police, and the force’s then-solicitor Peter Metcalf will go to trial charged with perverting the course of justice.

There is an important request related to this news breaking: that there be no public comment/editorializing on the matter. This is due to concerns that the case could be thrown out over charges that the jury pool would be tainted by public opinion and unable to render a just verdict.
