Reds target Emil Forsberg eyes move away from Leipzig

Emil Forsberg, a reported Liverpool target in last summer’s transfer window, is the latest name mooted as a potential alternative to Nabil Fekir.

The Reds remain in the market for a creative, goalscoring midfielder after a near-complete deal for Fekir fell through at the eleventh hour.

And the club have received encouragement that RB Leizpig’s Forsberg may be available after he told Swedish website Fotbollskanalen that he is eager for a step up the footballing ladder.

“I’m ready for the next big step,” he said. “That’s going to be very interesting [but] I am in dialogue with RB and always had a good relationship with the club.

“I have the dream of playing for the strongest clubs in the world.”

Forsberg was restricted to 21 Bundesliga appearances last term by injury but his overall numbers for Die Roten Bullen are impressive – he has scored 21 goals and assisted a further 37 in 112 games for the club.

It was his exploits during the 2016/17 campaign, when he was directly involved in 30 league goals, which sparked Liverpool’s initial interest.

Forsberg is a versatile player who lines-up predominantly at left wing but can also slot in on the right or behind the striker.

According to Calcio Mercato, Leipzig, who proved themselves to be obstinate negotiators during the Reds’ prolonged pursuit of Naby Keita, will accept nothing less than a direct fee of £35million for Forsberg.

Forsberg is currently at the World Cup with Sweden and will be hoping to fire his country into the knockout stages after they opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over South Korea.
