Liverpool’s confirmed 23-man squad for Napoli clash

Jurgen Klopp has selected his 23-man travelling squad for Liverpool’s away clash with Napoli in the Champions League.

The Reds take on Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli side tomorrow night at the Stadio San Paolo in their second fixture in Group C.

Liverpool won their opening match against Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 at Anfield. Goals from Daniel Sturridge, James Milner and Roberto Firmino were enough to overcome the lacklustre French champions despite their late fightback.

The Liverpool squad left John Lennon Airport at midday today on a three-hour flight to Naples. There, they’ll continue preparations ahead of tomorrow night’s game.

Included in the 23-man squad are Virgil van Dijk (recovering from a rib injury sustained in the win over Southampton) and Divock Origi, who is on the comeback from an ankle problem. Adam Lallana isn’t yet fit enough to make the squad as he recovers from a groin injury.

Liverpool most recently faced Napoli in a pre-season friendly this summer, beating the visitors 5-0 in Dublin. However, the Reds last competitive match against the Italian side came in a Europa League game in the 2010/11 season – this was the second-string squad who played out a goalless draw that night:

The Reds have come a long way since the Roy Hodgson era, undergoing significant reshaping and development under Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers before Jurgen Klopp took the reins in 2015. His 23-man squad for tomorrow night’s match is, as all will agree, much-improved.
