Rumour Mongering: Bayern Munich Star Tolisso Wants Liverpool Move

It’s not going to happen, but it’s a sign of Liverpool’s improved standing that it can even be suggested.

Liverpool will not be signing Lyon’s Nabil Fekir this summer after a medical left the club fearing for his long-term fitness prospects. It’s expected they will sign another midfielder this summer, though, even if as yet there is no consensus on who that might be.

And in the absence of any really solid information to go on, when it comes to the transfer market speculation is inevitable. Speculation like that Bayern Munich young star Corentin Tolisso has a dream club, and that dream club isn’t Madrid or Barcelona. Or Bayern.

No, according to Calcio Insider, citing a source close to the player, for 23-year-old Tolisso—who became Bayern’s record signing last year when they paid Lyon €41.5M for him—the dream club is Liverpool. The idea of him ending up at Anfield, though, seems far fetched.

Given his transfer fee last summer, his age and promise, and the impact he’s already made for Bayern—he had 10 goals and seven assists in 40 appearances last season in a box-to-box role—the idea of him moving on this summer is an odd one to say the very least.

And it seems to be largely based around a series of quotes from the player that were made back in 2017, when Tolisso said he saw the Premier League as his eventual destination and pointed to ex-Red Steven Gerrard as the player he tried to model his game around.

Take those quotes and throw in an anonymous source with ties to the player claiming he still wants a Liverpool move and you get a story where even if all of it’s true, it’s not likely to amount to anything—and certainly it’s not likely to amount to anything this summer.

Still, it’s at least a sign of Liverpool’s improved standing in football that a story like this about a young Bayern star dreaming of playing for Klopp at Anfield can be floated. Even if it’s not going to amount to anything, that’s kind of nice.
