England Wins Penalty Shoot Out and Book a Place in Quarterfinals

Jordan Henderson missed a penalty, but still England still beat Colombia to qualify.

England left it down to the wire after painfully allowing Colombia to send the game into extra time when they scored in the 93rd minute through a Yerry Mina header. Harry Kane converted a penalty in the 57th minute to give the Three Lions the lead, which they held until the dying moments of the game.

Colombia was pushing as the clock wound down, and Mateus Uribe forced England keeper Jordan Pickford into a world class, diving save, barely tipping his long-range effort onto the other side of the bar for a corner. Mina then promptly buried the ball into the back of the net.

Jordan Henderson has been having an excellent World Cup, doing a good job of leading the midfield and doing the sort of thankless tasks we’re used to seeing him do for Liverpool. It’s unfortunate, then, that he was the only England player to miss his penalty in the shoot-out, but luckily the Three Lions still pulled out their first Round of 16 win since 2006.

Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold round out the group of Liverpool players still alive in this World Cup, including Dejan Lovren, Simon Mignolet, and Roberto Firmino. England will play their quarterfinal match against Sweden, who won their own knockout match against Switzerland.
