Fekir will “seize opportunity” to leave Lyon

Lyon manager Bruno Genesio admits Nabil Fekir is keen on moving to a ‘bigger club’ as uncertainty remains over his proposed transfer to Liverpool.

The deal had progressed so far that Fekir had even conducted an introductory interview with LFCTV, only for the club to ostensibly walk away over medical concerns.

No clear alternative to Fekir has emerged, and while Liverpool’s public position has not changed, sources in France suggest the deal could yet be resurrected.

Inevitably, Genesio was asked about the saga at a recent press conference and while he expressed a desire to hold on to his star man, he reaffirmed that he will be allowed to depart the club.

“I am working under the assumption that he will stay with us,” he said, according to Get French Football News. He wants to take the next step. The president has offered him the chance to leave.

“We will see after the World Cup. If Nabil is here, it makes my job easier. I would be happy to keep him.

“I think that he is looking at two possibilities: to stay to play the Champions’ League with us or to leave to join a bigger club.

“I would have liked him to play more for France. There is still, I hope three matches to come with the French national team.”

Genesio also hinted that, if Liverpool return to the negotiating table with an acceptable offer, the deal should go through.

“He has expressed his desire to play at another level,” he is quoted as saying. “We will need to set a date. If there is a possibility like with Liverpool, Nabil will certainly seize the opportunity, once both parties agree.”

France booked a quarterfinal place by beating Argentina on Saturday, and it is understood that any possible progress on the deal is unlikely until the squad leave Russia.

Liverpool’s transfer business is, in general, expected to regain momentum following the World Cup.
