Robertson relishing first full pre-season under Klopp

Andy Robertson says he is brimming with motivation as he gets his first full pre-season at Liverpool underway.

Robertson joined the Reds from Hull City during last summer’s transfer window for just £8million and went on to emerge as one of the bargains of the year as he starred at left-back.

The Scot had limited time to impress Klopp and started the season as Alberto Moreno’s understudy, but this time round he is available from week one as he looks to build his fitness.

“I came in a bit late [last season] and missed the trip to Hong Kong, which I was a bit gutted about,” Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com at Melwood.

“I think I did the first three weeks with Hull so it was a lot different – it’s always good to get a full pre-season with the team you’re going to be with.

“I knew I was leaving Hull last season so it was a tough one but this season I’m settled and I can really focus on pre-season.

“Over the close season I’ve been working on getting fit and now I want to get fitter until August and it’s all leading up to that West Ham game now.”

Robertson knows a gruelling pre-season awaits but has challenged the Liverpool squad to be at the top of their game from the outset.

“The pre-season here is intense but I think it shows when the boys are flying in the first game of the season and then throughout,” he said.

“Our sports scientists are second to none and they have it all thought out.

“It’ll be tough on the legs but it’s all worth it when the season comes and you need to be raring to go instead of at maybe 80-85 per cent.”

Liverpool play their first friendly of the summer on Saturday afternoon as they visit National League North outfit Chester.

“I can’t wait. It’s good that [we have] game so quick, sometimes people do maybe a week or two lead-in that you don’t have a game.

“It’s good to get a game in straight away and pull on the strip, the last time we did it was the final, obviously.

“It’ll be good to get back into that kind of game feeling, the lads are looking forward to it, we’ve got a few good games coming up and we’re looking forward to them all.”

The trip to Chester is followed by games against Tranmere, Bury and Blackburn before the squad jets off to the United States.
