Klopp Talk: Dejan Lovren is Right About Dejan Lovren

The biggest fan of Dejan Lovren not named Dejan Lovren is Jurgen Klopp.

Dejan Lovren and his Croatian teammates are set to take on France in the World Cup Final on Sunday. And earlier in the week, Dejan Lovren talked about how he thinks he’s one of the best defenders in the world.

After the 0-0 draw against Bury F.C., Klopp reflected on the defender’s remarks, and added some of his own.

“It would be better if someone else said that and not Dejan, but actually he is right,” said Klopp. “The only problem is no-one actually thinks about it but if you go into the detail it is not a big surprise. Croatia do not have world class right-back and left-back, but they do not concede. In the middle of the park Rakitic and Modric are offensive, so somebody must fix all that and he is a big part of it.

“He was with us in the Champions League final, and two years ago in the Europa League final. Okay, we did not win that but that means only 11 players were better than us, and only two centre-halves. I did not see two better centre-halves in the Champions League (final) – only that they were more ruthless.”

The manger is clearly backs his central defender. After a disastrous first part of the season for Lovren, that culminated in getting hooked as a tactical first half sub away at Tottenham, the defender has come a long way.

Lovren has had a decent run of form the last few months, seeing as he’s played in the Champions League Final and, barring any unforeseen circumstances, is likely to start in the World Cup Final. Whether that run of form will be tarnished by a mistake or two is yet to be seen. Hopefully we will see him consistently preform well.

“He has played a really good World Cup but to do it consistency is the main thing,” Klopp added. “Dejan and I will be working together for a long time. I have the opportunity to help him and next time, maybe I will say it.”
