Liverpool’s transfer workings revealed

The foundations for Liverpool’s success in the transfer market under Jurgen Klopp have been revealed in an insightful article.

Since Klopp took over in October 2015, the Reds have twice broken global transfer records, shelling out historic fees for Virgil van Dijk and, most recently, Alisson Becker, but have also proven themselves to be remarkably shrewd, picking up 42-goal forward Mohamed Salah for a relative snip at £37million and capturing impressive full-back Andrew Robertson for just £8million.

Sporting Director Michael Edwards has earned many of the plaudits from supporters given his capacity for identifying players who will seamlessly slot into Klopp’s unique side and for his skill as a negotiator.

But he is just one element of an important ‘core triad’ which combines to ensure the manager can land his top targets, according to Joe.co.uk‘s Melissa Reddy.

Crucially, it is understood that the trio – Edwards, Klopp and FSG President Mike Gordon – share the same objectives and ultimate vision – an ideological harmony which has not existed at Anfield in the past.

Typically, Reddy writes, Klopp and Edwards will discuss a prospective addition over breakfast or lunch in a casual setting.

They will then proceed to a more formal review based upon the thorough work of Head of Recruitment Dave Fallows, chief scout Barry Hunter and Ian Graham, who heads a respected research team.

A shortlist for the positions concerned will then be sent to Gordon, who provides the financial backing and any other required services.

The club’s reluctance to compromise after initial failure in the pursuit of van Dijk or Nabil Fekir suggests the shortlists in question often feature very few names.

While Edwards is set to pinpoint the right player, it is down to Klopp to convince them to buy into his project.

Liverpool have not shied away from spending huge sums (the deal for Alisson took them past £170million for the summer) because they are supremely confident in their scouting process.
