Rumour Mongering: Christian Pulisic Now and Forever

The Dortmund attacking midfielder has been linked to Liverpool yet again.

Two years ago, Liverpool put in a substantial (though apparently not substantial enough) bid for then 17-year-old Christian Pulisic. Two years on, the Borussia Dortmund-based American starlet has become a star, most recently netting twice against Liverpool in the preseason International Champions Cup.

During Liverpool’s preseason romp through the US, the media has once again been trying to make Pulisic to Liverpool a thing. Jürgen Klopp has been typically tight-lipped surrounding any possible transfers, but the words he has spoken would not seem to indicate an impending move for the talented youngster.

“We have everything we need for the next season,” Klopp said, immediately following the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson. “I don’t think we will do anything more. I’m pretty sure of that.”

Mere words are not enough to stop the rumor mill from spinning though, and the media is making a concerted effort to make this non-story a story. And they’ve had help, specifically from some quotes by Mark Pulisic, Christian’s father.

“The Premier League is a league where he’s always aspired to be in and play in,” Pulisic Sr. said to Sky Sports. “As a player nowadays, there are so few players staying at one club throughout a career, the chances of him moving to different clubs and leagues is a high probability.”

Ah. Premier League. Liverpool are in the Premier League. Liverpool appear not to be back in for Nabil Fekir. So obviously Liverpool are now in for Pulisic.

Additionally, reports from the publication Kicker indicate that Dortmund have slapped a €70 million (~£62 million) price tag on the American.

From the outside, it seems like Pulisic’s agent and/or father are the ones pushing the possibility of him leaving. Despite strong interest from many clubs (including Liverpool) in the past several years, Pulisic has remained at Dortmund. So maybe he really wants to leave, or maybe he’s looking for leverage in contract negotiations. Hard to say.

As for the Liverpool links, they need to be taken with a heavy grain of salt. There has been no sign from the club, or any of the club connected journalists, that he is on our radar this summer.
