Alisson Believes Clean Sheets Are a Team Effort

The goalkeeper has been getting plenty of the plaudits, but he was quick to share credit.

As the 2018-19 season kicks into gear, Liverpool fans are understandably thrilled by the performance of the Reds’ new-look defense, led by the imperious Virgil van Dijk and brand new goalkeeper Alisson Becker. For years, Liverpool’s defense has always been their weakness. Time and again, the back five have allowed wins to slip to draws and draws to become losses.

It’s a brand new world this season. Jürgen Klopp’s carefully crafted defense look to be the real deal. They’ve gone the first three games of the season without conceding a goal. The last time that happened was back in 2013-2014, when Brendan Rodgers’ Reds won their first three games 1-0. The difference between then and now is that in those 2013 games if felt like luck when Liverpool didn’t concede. This time around, Liverpool’s impressive results feel earned thanks to the careful, disciplined, and entertaining performances of the defense.

Liverpool’s Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson has endeared himself to the fans with three excellent opening matches between the sticks for the Reds. The player, however, was quick to compliment his teammates after their victory against Brighton.

“Hopefully I will keep helping the team, it is a teamwork. I have my contribution, but I am not the main responsibility for the clean sheets,” he said.

“If we do not concede we will be close to winning because our attack is really good. I’m very comfortable at the club in a great environment, with everybody pushing in the same direction to win. We’ve shown what we are capable of and hopefully we can keep on track. The Premier League is very tough and competitive.”

Whoever is to thank for this feeling of bubbling excitement, long may it continue. In the mean time, I’ll just be here daydreaming about Liverpool winning 38 league games along with 38 clean sheets.
