Caoimhin Kelleher now third-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp took the opportunity this summer to blood a number of the youngsters in the Reds setup during pre-season fixtures.

The likes of Curtis Jones, Nat Phillips and Rafa Camacho were drafted into the squad and all rose to the challenge impressively with a number of excellent performances.

And now, the Echo are reporting that young goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has also caught Klopp’s eye during training at Melwood.

The 19-year-old Irish youth international has moved ahead of fellow Academy player Kamil Grabara and is now regarded as Liverpool’s third-choice keeper behind Alisson Becker and Simon Mignolet.

According to reports, the management and backroom staff at Liverpool have been extremely impressed with Kelleher’s rapid development, so much so that he has been drafted into the first-team squad.

“He is an outstanding talent. Outstanding. Very cool with the ball, you saw that in pre-season when he played in front of 100,000 people, that he wasn’t bothered about that which is a very important skill to have,” said Klopp of Kelleher.

“For most of his youth he was an outfield player, he has fantastic reactions. If nothing serious happens, he will have a really fantastic future. I don’t know how many really good goalkeepers that Ireland have but one more is never a big problem. I like him a lot and he will be in our squad.”

Kelleher was born in Cork and joined Liverpool in 2015 from Ringmahon Rangers.

Klopp was aware that either Mignolet or Loris Karius would leave the club this summer but chose to stick with Kelleher as third-choice keeper due to his impressive development.
