Anfield bid to stage concerts and other sporting events rejected

Liverpool have had a bid to develop the future uses of Anfield Stadium rejected by the city council.

In a surprise move, the council opted to reject two planning proposals submitted by the club to stage music concerts and other sporting events at the ground.

A number of local councillors were among those who led opposition to the proposals, as well as residents who live near to the stadium.

The Echo stated that: “local councillors including Ian Byrne, Adele Dowling and Billy Marrat all spoke against the proposal – arguing that they could blight residents lives with noise, parking and anti-social behaviour issues – when they already put up with a lot during the football season.”

Local resident Nicola Cotter explained how matchday noise and busyness impacts her family.

“End of May, mid August is the only respite we have, I don’t want that taken away from us,” said Nicola.

The club attempted to reassure local residents at today’s council meeting that their opinions and concerns have been taken into consideration, but the committee was unmoved. Councillors backed a motion from councillor Harry Doyle to reject the club’s proposal to stage different sporting events at Anfield, which was narrowly upheld after a vote of four to three.

A decision will be taken in future on the stadium being used for music concerts, but the result will likely follow the same trajectory as that of today’s decision.
