Aston Villa keen on loan move for Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo

Birmingham Live are reporting that Aston Villa have identified Liverpool’s Sheyi Ojo as a transfer target after a move for Everton’s Yannick Bolasie failed to materialise.

Villa had hoped to sign Bolasie on loan from the Toffees, but the DR Congo winger is unwilling to drop down to the Championship.

Manager Steve Bruce is keen to improve his wide options for this season and 21-year-old Ojo could represent smart business after Villa missed out on deals for Harry Wilson and Ben Woodburn earlier in the summer.

Jurgen Klopp is keen for Ojo to gain more experience this season, and as he would find chances in the first team at Liverpool very limited with the arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri and return of Adam Lallana, a loan move would make the most sense for all parties involved. Ojo spent loan spells with Wolves and Fulham (scoring 4 times in 24 appearances), and Klopp was quick to praise his development this summer:

“Ojo played a fantastic pre-season, really good and confident technically anyway, really strong, improved a lot in tactical things and his attitude was great.

“For me, he is a no-brainer, to be honest, and I think that will happen. It makes sense for him to go on loan.”

Steve Bruce spoke frankly about Villa’s transfer business:

“It’s very difficult to get players in (from the Premier League). We have to be realistic and hope we can sign one or two from the bigger clubs.

“We couldn’t sign Axel Tuanzebe, for example, but down the line, hopefully we can. The big clubs want them to get experience and that’s only normal.

“We’ve been close to one or two and they’ve gone to Europe – somewhere in Italy, France or Spain. Others want to go and play in Europe, too. There are some that just don’t want to entertain it.”

Ojo would certainly benefit from regular first-team football throughout this season. Many believe he could go on to become an important part of Klopp’s squad in future, though others have suggested that the window of opportunity may have already passed him by.
