Klopp Talk: Joe Gomez is Very Good
The boss confirms what we already knew.
Liverpool have kept three clean sheets in their first three matches of the 2018-19 Premier League season because of their stellar defensive until. A welcomed surprise to how well the defense has been playing is Joe Gomez finally playing center back alongside Virgil van Dijk. After two seasons missed due to injury, and a season deputizing at right back, it’s nice to see the young English international get an opportunity to play a more central defensive role. He’s also taken advantage of that opportunity.
After Liverpool ground out a 1-0 victory of Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp had nothing but praise for the Defender. “Very good,” the boss said after being asked about Gomez’s performance in the match.
“Today was a big test. Brighton thought they could pick on Joe for the long ball, and he did really well. I don’t think he made one foul, won 70/80 per cent of his duels. He is a good footballer, I like him. He has a lot of nice things for a CB.” Klopp added.
There was some nerves within Reds supporters at the beginning of the season regarding the center back position. With Klavan leaving on a transfer and both Matip & Lovren hurt, Jurgen was left with having to trust the youngster who hadn’t started a single game at center back for Liverpool. The boss’ trust in Gomez has certainly paid off so far. Hopefully this purple patch of form can continue.
