Liverpool refuse to budge on Dortmund deal for Origi

Divock Origi in action for VfL Wolfsburg

Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund remain locked in talks over striker Divock Origi, report the Telegraph.

Dortmund are keen on taking the Belgian forward on loan but Liverpool are adamant that any deal must include an obligation to buy the player at the end of his time with the German club.

The Bundesliga transfer window slams shut at 6pm on Friday, August 31 and Liverpool will aim to ensure that Origi is set up with a suitable club by then.

However, their £27million valuation of the player has so far deterred clubs from making an approach to purchase, with a loan deal a more preferable option. Origi has two years left on his current Anfield contract and Liverpool will only loan him if the move will automatically become permanent at the end of the season.

Origi moved to Liverpool in 2014 under Brendan Rodgers for £10million in what many considered to be a coup signing at the time. His initial time under Klopp appeared positive, but after Roberto Firmino’s success as the focal point striker in Liverpool’s attack, Origi found chances hard to come by and was loaned to Wolfsburg last season, where he scored 6 goals in 31 appearances.

At 23 years old, however, Origi would still represent a good signing for a club willing to work on his development and give him regular playing time. Liverpool recognise this and want to ensure that his value doesn’t drop when out on loan with only one year left in his contract upon return. They approached the summer sale of Danny Ings in the same manner, only allowing Southampton to loan him for the season if the move became permanent by the end of his spell there – Ings will become a permanent Southampton player for £18million plus add-ons in 2019.

To his credit, Origi returned from his loan spell at Wolfsburg intending to fight for his place in the Liverpool squad but was told he was surplus to requirements, especially after the resurgence of Daniel Sturridge. He is, however, reportedly open to the Dortmund move.

Liverpool will be keen to make the deal happen before the end of the month, but will not change their stance on the requirement for a pre-agreed sale price fixed into the deal.
