Man City scoffed at Van Dijk price tag

The Manchester City hierarchy scoffed at the thought of forking out £75million for Virgil van Dijk before he sealed his move to Liverpool, a new documentary has revealed.

All or Nothing is a behind-the-scenes series charting City’s record-breaking 2017/18 season.

It features a meeting in which club chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak discusses manager Pep Guardiola’s request for a new centre-half with chief executive Ferran Soriano and director of football Txiki Begiristain.

Van Dijk’s name is mentioned, but responding the price tag, Al Mubarak says: “Txiki, a central defender, come on. What are we doing?

“You can’t be serious,” he adds in disbelief.

Liverpool unsuccessfully tried to sign Van Dijk in the summer of 2017 but, amid interest from other suitors, the Dutchman always appeared to have his heart set on a move to Anfield.

He got his wish the following January when the Reds completed the world-record deal, and Van Dijk’s form has been mightily-impressive ever since.
