Milner: Rodgers would have turned it around

James Milner believes former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers could have ‘turned things round’ had been allowed to continue at Anfield.

Milner says Rodgers, now in charge at Celtic, was instrumental in his decision to join the Reds after he left Manchester City.

He believes the Northern Irishman, who very nearly led Liverpool a remarkable title win, is of the same calibre as his replacement Jurgen Klopp.

“My impression of him is that he’s a very good manager; he was one of the main reasons I signed for Liverpool, in fact,” he revealed in an interview with the Times.

“It’s a massive club and doesn’t need too much selling but Brendan played a very big part when I made my decision.

“Liverpool’s loss has been Celtic’s gain, but we were lucky enough to bring in Jurgen Klopp after Brendan. He’s another top manager, so it’s worked out well for both clubs. Brendan did well at Anfield and he came so close to ending that long wait for the title.”

Rodgers was dismissed in October 2015 with the struggling Reds tenth in the Premier League after finishing a disappointing sixth the year before.

Successor Klopp has led the team back into the Champions League and has assembled a squad many believe capable of winning the league, but Milner reckons Rodgers too could have achieved success had the club been more patient.

“Would he have turned things round if he’d been given more time? I’m sure he would have done,” Milner said. “You don’t come as close as he did to winning the league without doing something right, but the club chose a different path.”
