Woodburn relishing Sheffield United opportunities

Ben Woodburn is eager to showcase the extent of his abilities after sealing a season-long loan switch from Liverpool to Sheffield United on Wednesday.

Liverpool have judged Bramall Lane the best place for the 18-year-old’s development, confident that he will enjoy adequate game-time at a fairly high level.

Woodburn found first-team opportunities at Anfield very hard to come by last season and was ultimately restricted to just two appearances, so he is understandably brimming with optimism after receiving guarantees of regular football.

“I’ve enjoyed a few chats with the manager and his aims are similar to mine and I expect us to have a good season,” he told the Sheffield United website.

“I’m looking forward to coming out on-loan to play games and it’s an exciting time. This is a great club, I’ve spoken to Lee Evans [a fellow Welshman who plays in midfield for the Blades] and he loves the place, so it seems the right move for me.

“David Brooks [who shone for United last season] is a good friend of mine and he loved it here too, he’s moved on now [to Bournemouth], maybe I’m the new David Brooks?”

Liverpool’s youngest-ever scorer is in fine fettle after being handed opportunities to impress for the Reds in pre-season and could be in line to make his debut when United face Swansea in their first Championship game on Saturday evening.

Woodburn is keen to make an immediate impression against one of the promotion favourites.

“I can’t wait for the weekend, I’m looking forward to scoring and creating goals and winning games,” he declared.

He joins compatriot Harry Wilson, who will ply his trade for Frank Lampard’s Derby County this season, on loan in the second tier.
