Andy Robertson named permanent Scotland captain

Andy Robertson has been named captain of the Scottish national team.

The 24-year-old left-back, seen as one of Liverpool’s best bargain buys in recent years, will take over from Celtic’s Scott Brown, who retired from international football earlier this year, according to reports.

Robertson has been capped 22 times for Scotland and scored twice. He made his debut against Poland in 2014.

The young Scot will wear the armband for the first time on Friday against Belgium in a friendly at Hampden Park, before his first competitive fixture as captain against Albania in Glasgow as part of the UEFA Nations League.

Scotland announced Robertson as permanent captain on Twitter using a famous quote from Alex Ferguson, which reads “You cannot lead by following.”

Robertson has become integral to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team since joining from Hull in 2017.
