Carragher hails Shaqiri business

Jamie Carragher says Xherdan Shaqiri was a “brilliant buy” for Liverpool at just £13million and reckons the Reds would have no issue recouping their outlay if necessary.

The Reds triggered a release clause which became active once Stoke were relegated from the Premier League, picking up one of the division’s most exciting talents for a significantly reduced fee.

The CIES Football Observatory estimate that Liverpool paid only around half of the Swiss international’s actual value.

Shaqiri has been restricted to cameos from the substitutes’ bench so far but played an important role in the latter stages at Leicester as the Reds looked to see the game out.

“I think it’s a brilliant buy for Liverpool,” club legend Carragher told Sky Sports. “You look at the price tag, his age as well, he will [make an impact]. He made an impact at Leicester when he came on.”

Carragher is confident that, should Shaqiri ultimately fail to meet expectations, Liverpool will not suffer a loss.

“It’s one of those buys where even if it doesn’t work out, there’s no way they’re not going to get their money back. So I think it works for everyone really.”

Shaqiri could play a much greater role in the coming weeks as the club navigate a series of testing ties in the Premier League, League Cup and Champions League.
