Henderson on Gomez: “He can be as good as he wants to be”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has delivered a glowing appraisal of Joe Gomez’s development so far this season.

Henderson and Gomez have linked up with the England senior squad for upcoming matches against Spain and Switzerland during the international break. Gomez’s involvement in particular is testament to the quality of his performances over the last few weeks, during which he has started every game for Liverpool at centre-back alongside Virgil van Djik in the absence of Dejan Lovren.

And his captain, who signed a new long-term deal at Liverpool this week, believes 21-year-old Gomez is on course for a big future at Anfield.

“He’s already very good but he can be even better,” Henderson told Sky Sports News, as quoted in the Express.

“He’s still very young. He’s still improving, still learning and there’s no better place to do that than at Liverpool with the players that he’s got around him and the manager.

“I’m excited for him because I know how good he can be and he’s got the right mentality as well.

“He’s very mature for his age. His feet are firmly on the ground and he can be as good as he wants to be.”

Gomez has continued to go from strength to strength under Jurgen Klopp. Making his England debut last November, he went on to be named man of the match on his full debut in a 0-0 draw with Brazil, successfully nullifying the likes of Neymar and Philippe Coutinho throughout the game.

Klopp used him primarily as a right-back last season, rotating him with Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has also progressed rapidly under the German manager. And now, with Lovren still out injured, Klavan’s departure from the club, and the return of Nathaniel Clyne as a viable full-back option, Gomez is finally getting his chance in his preferred position at centre-back, and he’s thriving there.

Henderson remains confident that Gomez will continue his fine club form for his international team.

“Here [with England] as well, it’s a fantastic environment with the players, the manager, the staff, everybody here,” said Henderson.

“It’s a fantastic environment for him to then bring that form into England and show how good he is against the best players in the world.”

Henderson and Gomez could both start for England when they take on Spain at Wembley Stadium this Saturday in their opening UEFA Nations League match.
