Klopp will not rotate goalkeepers in the Champions League this season

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will not rotate his goalkeepers in the Premier League or Champions League group stages this season as he did in last season’s campaign, according to reports.

Simon Mignolet started the season as first-choice keeper but was phased out as Loris Karius came to the fore. Karius started Liverpool’s Champions League ties and became first-choice between the sticks by the end of the season, before his blunders in the Champions League final cost Liverpool the trophy.

With the arrival of Alisson Becker from Roma for £65million, the German’s policy of switching goalkeepers for different games has changed.

When asked if Alisson and Mignolet would be rotated this season, Klopp responded with a simple but firm “No.”

Karius departed for Besiktas on a two-year loan deal, meaning Mignolet will spend this season as Liverpool’s number two. Academy goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was recently announced as the third-choice first team keeper.

Mignolet was keen to leave Anfield in order to secure regular playing time, claiming it was “bizarre” that Karius was allowed to leave when he was forced to stay at Liverpool, comments that were criticised by Klopp.

Liverpool, who currently occupy top spot in the Premier League after four wins from four, kick off their Champions League campaign on September 18 with a home tie against Paris Saint-Germain amid a hectic fixture schedule.
