‘Leaders’ key as Liverpool look to make amends at Wembley
Liverpool have ‘come a long way’ since their gut-wrenching 4-1 defeat away at Tottenham last season and the leaders in their squad will be crucial as they look to make amends this weekend, according to John Aldridge.
The Reds head to Wembley off the back of four consecutive victories, sitting top of the table on goal difference.
But after kicking off the campaign with games against West Ham, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Leicester, this will be by far their toughest test yet.
Aldridge reckons victory for the Reds would underline their title credentials.
“You can only afford to lose three or four games these days if you want to win the league,” he wrote in his latest column for the Liverpool Echo.
“The important thing is not to lose, especially against the top teams. Tottenham took four points off us last year and we can’t let that happen again.

“They will be up there again at the end of the season so we need to take points off them to make sure we stay ahead of them and the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.
“We’ve seen what they did to Manchester United, they’re no mugs. If you have an off day, they make you pay, as they did against us last season.
“Before last year, we always used to do very well against Tottenham. We had some great results over the years at White Hart Lane.”
Liverpool’s defence unravelled on their last visit to Wembley, with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son both scoring inside 12 minutes before Dele Alli added a third on the stroke of half-time.
Aldridge says the likes of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk need to be at the top of their game to ensure the Reds can repel Spurs’ advances this time around.
“The defeat at Wembley last year was hard to take but we’ve come a long way since then. We’re a better team now than we were then.
“We’ve got a leader at the back and goalkeeper who is a leader as well.
“We will need that against Tottenham because they have got some really good players who we’ll need to keep at bay.”
