Mane told Firmino “you don’t need your eye” for PSG match

Liverpool forward Firmino did not need his injured eye to play against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday night, at least according to teammate Sadio Mane.

Mane revealed that he texted Firmino, who replaced Daniel Sturridge in the 72nd minute in the Champions League opener with PSG, to inform him that he didn’t need both eyes for the match. Firmino went on to prove the Senegalese winger correct by scored a brilliant injury-time winner to claim all three points and top Group C.

Firmino picked up his eye injury on Saturday when Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen caught him with a stray hand – Mane revealed that he told Firmino to make himself available for the game with PSG.

“I think Bobby doesn’t need his eye to play so I told him,” Mane said. “I sent him a message on Monday saying, ‘Hey Bobby, come on, we need you’.

“You’ve all seen the ‘no look’ goals so I think he doesn’t need his eye to play. I texted him saying, ‘You don’t need your eye’.”

Daniel Sturridge started up front in place of Firmino and repaid Klopp’s faith by scoring an instinctive header from a pinpoint Andy Robertson cross. This was followed by a clinical James Milner penalty after Gini Wijnaldum was fouled in the box.

Liverpool endured a late rally from a fairly lacklustre PSG to win the game 3-2 in injury time. Mane, however, refused to get carried away.

“It’s a great start,” Mane added. “It is too early to speak about anything, but it is very important for us to focus more because we are Liverpool , we are a stronger team, and we will try to do our best every game. I think it’s a big result [against PSG] honestly. It is very important for us to keep going on our good run.

“It was not an easy game because PSG are one of the best teams in the world, but we played very well and deserved to win.”

Liverpool take on Southampton this Saturday at Anfield.
