Van Dijk says Liverpool’s ‘belief’ was key to PSG victory

Virgil van Dijk insists Liverpool had no special plan to deal with PSG’s top-drawer attackers and reckons it was their ‘belief’ which ultimately carried them to victory.

After dominating the second half, the Reds were dealt a gut-wrenching blow when Kylian Mbappe finished off a rare PSG attack to level the scores with less than ten minutes remaining.

Crucially, though, they persevered and were able to wrestle back the three points thanks to Roberto Firmino’s stoppage-time strike.

Last year’s runner-up, then, underlined their intention to go all the way this time around by battling past one of the best teams in Europe, and Van Dijk feels their attitude was key.

“We have belief – you have to have belief,” he explained. “We want to do at least as well as we did last season. That’s a very hard thing to do, but you have to believe.”

The Dutchman, together with Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, performed well against the revered frontline of Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani, but says Liverpool’s gameplan did not focus on stopping the trio.

“We didn’t just have a plan to control Neymar – we had a plan to control the whole team,” he said. “They have many great players and we did very well. Everyone’s excited.

“We’ve made a good start but we haven’t won anything yet,” Van Dijk added. “We need to show it every week – every three days – and keep going. But we’re obviously very pleased.”
