Mario Gotze urged to join Liverpool by former teammate

World Cup winner Mario Gotze has been advised by former teammate Kevin Grosskreutz to push for a move to Liverpool in January, according to Sky Sports.

Gotze, 26, has fallen out of favour at current club Borussia Dortmund, who he chose to join over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in 2016 after leaving Bayern Munich. His appearance against Bruges in a 1-0 Champions League win during the week was only his second of the campaign so far.

Grosskreutz, who plies his trade for KFC Uerdingen 05, has encouraged Gotze to follow Klopp to Anfield in order to rekindle what was formerly an excellent player-manager relationship.

“I’m very sorry for Mario Gotze at the moment, because stuff is written about him – and only him – every day,” Grosskreutz told Sky Sports in Germany.

“In Bruges, for example, the whole team didn’t play well.

“Maybe it would be good for him to go abroad in the winter to find a bit more peace and bring his career back on track.

“(Jurgen) Klopp knows him quite well, he would be a good fit for Liverpool.”

Gotze’s career has stagnated somewhat since he scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, with only 10 goals to his name in three seasons since the start of the 2015-16 season.

It remains to be seen whether or not Liverpool would retain any interest in Gotze, with a number of other players available and performing well in the positions he could occupy.
