Mohamed Salah’s Merseyside Derby Goal Wins 2018 Puskás Award

It was his first of, hopefully, many goals to come against Everton.

The first half was winding down on December 10, 2017, during the first Merseyside derby of the season. The match was scoreless until Joe Gomez passes the ball to Mohamed Salah on the right side of the box. Salah, making his derby debut, glides past one, two, three Everton defenders before taking a perfect shot with that dangerous left foot that sails past Jordan Pickford and whizzes into the back of the net to break the deadlock.

And with that goal, Mohamed Salah opened his account in the famous Merseyside derby and also secured himself the 2018 Puskás Award for the best goal of the year. Scoring against Everton is always sweet for a Liverpool player. Scoring the best goal of the season against Everton is icing on the cake.

The personal awards for the Egyptian King keep coming, with this being just the latest in a long list dating back to last season.

What makes this award even better is that it means that Gareth Bale’s bicycle kick against Liverpool in the Champions League final was snubbed — a fact that gives me vindictive satisfaction.

Next in line for Salah: the Ballon d’Or voting that will happen in the coming months.
