Robertson hails Sturridge impact in Champions League

Andy Robertson has highlighted the impact made by striker Daniel Sturridge in the victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night as indicative of the Liverpool squad’s ongoing positive mentality.

The Number 15 was handed a starting berth – his first ever in the Champions league for Liverpool – in the absence of Roberto Firmino, who suffered an eye injury in the match against Tottenham, and he made the most of his opportunity by powering home a header in the 30th minute from a typically inch-perfect Robertson cross.

It was a solid showing from Sturridge, who has experienced something of a revival this season after a spell at West Brom earlier in the year, and Robertson was keen to point out how it epitomises the Liverpool team in general.

“Behind the scenes and at training we’re all hungry to go for starting places,” Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com.

“Some people won’t play as much as they want, especially when it has been Saturday to Saturday and the gaffer has kind of stuck with his team.

“But we have got a lot of games coming up so everyone will be required.

“Studge sums it up – he comes on, plays 70 minutes and does unbelievably against a top side and two very good centre-backs. Credit to him and I’m sure all the boys sitting on the bench can look at him and they’ll make similar impacts when called upon.”

Sturridge’s performance was praised by Jurgen Klopp, who claims his forward is in the best shape since his arrival as manager. Amazingly, Firmino’s injury-time winner has propelled him to joint third place in the all-time list of Champions League scorers for Liverpool, behind only Steven Gerrard (30) and Ian Rush (14).

“Bobby got an unfortunate injury on Saturday and there’s Studge ready to go. I thought he was different class for 70 minutes, he was brilliant,” Robertson continued.

“And then Bobby comes off the bench and scores. It shows you the quality we’ve got in the squad. I was delighted to get an assist and it was a great header by Studge to set us on our way.”

Klopp will no doubt continue to rotate his squad in the coming weeks as Liverpool face a difficult, congested set of fixtures, beginning with Southampton on Saturday.
