Salah earns Puskas nomination for Derby magic

Mohamed Salah’s curling opener against Everton in last December’s Merseyside Derby has been nominated for the 2018 Fifa Puskas Award.

The award, named in honour of the Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas and given to the player deemed to have netted the most ‘beautiful goal’ of the year, was first handed out in 2009.

Salah is in the running this time around after a truly sensational strike against the Reds’ local rivals.

The Egyptian picked up the ball on the right-hand side of the area, overpowered Cuco Martina and evaded Idrissa Gueye before curling the ball past the helpless Jordan Pickford and into the far corner of the net.

His strike would have proven to be the winner had Everton not been awarded a controversial penalty around 15 minutes from time.

Salah, predictably, faces some stern competition, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead kick against Juventus, Gareth Bale’s acrobatic effort against Liverpool in the Champions League Final and Benjamin Pavard’s long-range half-volley for France against Argentina among the other goals shortlisted.

The 26-year-old, who remarkably scored 44 goals in his debut season at Anfield, has also been nominated for Fifa’s Best Men’s Player of 2018 prize.
