Shaqiri ‘amazed’ by Anfield atmosphere

Xherdan Shaqiri hailed the ‘amazing’ atmosphere on his first experience of a European night at Anfield as Liverpool scored a late, late winner against PSG.

The supporters were in fine voice under the lights, and the ground erupted when Roberto Firmino fired in a late winner to turn what would have been a disappointing result into another memorable one.

Speaking to the club website, Shaqiri was full of praise for the 50,000 Reds fans in attendance.

“It was just amazing,” the £13million summer signing said. “It always is when you score a winner in front of the fans, who were amazing. They supported us until the end. It was a great win for everybody.

“I felt it during the game, how loud the fans were. It was a good game to watch.”

Roberto Firmino’s eye problem left Klopp to choose between starting Shaqiri or Daniel Sturridge in attack.

Sturridge got the nod, and scored his side’s opening goal, but Shaqiri says ‘every player’, himself included, will play an important role over the course of the season as Liverpool fight on four fronts.

“Every team needs every player,” he said. “To be successful during the whole season we need every player.

“We’re going to have a lot of games – tough games – so every player has to be ready. We have a really good team and everybody can play. Every player is going to be important during the season.

“I try to do my best in training and in games when I come in to try and make it difficult for the coach,” he added in a separate interview with RTE.

The Swiss winger will be hopeful of a first start for the club when Southampton visit Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp has acknowledged the need to rotate his line-up in order to cope with a hectic schedule, and Shaqiri may well be one of the main beneficiaries.
