Shaqiri on Having a Winning Mentality
The Swiss international wants to help Liverpool win trophies.
While some people disagreed with the decision to bring Xherdan Shaqiri to Anfield this summer, despite his relatively low transfer fee, it’s impossible to fault his effort. He hasn’t had much opportunity to prove what he is capable of, but every time he steps onto the field, he’s a whirling dervish of activity. His speed and athleticism compared to his compact, thicc stature seems to spit in the face of everything we know about physics. It’s hard to root against someone who looks that determined to make an impact.
While away on international duty this week, Shaqiri spoke about his new club and what he thinks it takes to be successful.
“The aim is for the club to win something – that has to be the goal of our team,” he said.
“We have to take every game and try to win it, then close out from your mind the last game you won and think: ‘okay, we go forward now and look to the next game.’ It is like this that you win titles and I hope we are going to do that this year.
“First of all, we want to try to play very good football. But we also know it is not always the case that good football wins, so we need to know how to win games – that’s important – and to be competitive with other teams.”
Unlike many current Liverpool players, Shaqiri is someone who has experience winning titles, thanks to his years with Basel and Bayern Munich.
So far the Liverpool have proved that they can do what it takes to gut out hard wins. Even in the first four matches of the season, they’ve shown the kind of will to see out games that is seen in true competitors.
The first half of the international break is done, so it’ll only be another week until we see Liverpool back in action again, this time taking on Spurs in their first big test of the season.
