Gomez Talks About His Relationship with Alexander-Arnold and Healthy Competition
The two young English defenders pushed each other last season.
Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold are two young, English players that have become Liverpool fan favorites. Their obvious talent, clear determination, constant professionalism, and endearing personalities have fans cheering for them on and off the pitch.
Last season, the two were competing for the same full-back position. This year, Gomez has been moved into his natural position of center-back, thanks to an injury to Dejan Lovren.
Now both players are in the England camp for the September round of internationals, and Gomez has some kind words to say about his teammate and friend.
“He’s a top player. He has obviously got a joke of a delivery and it’s great playing alongside him,” Gomez said of Alexander-Arnold.
“Last year, we were both playing full-back and I think we pushed each other a lot. It was good that we both got the opportunity to get the games we did.
“This year, I’m playing alongside him – I’ve played in the centre and he’s on the right, we have a good relationship. I know his strengths and how good he is going forward and defensively. You think he’s quiet but he wants to win all the time.”
Liverpool’s impressive back four have only let in one goal so far this campaign, and even that was a bit of a fluke. Joe Gomez, in particular, is garnering praise across the board for his assured performances alongside partner Virgil van Dijk.
With Gomez working to cement his place as a center-back, it seems unlikely that the two friends will ever be competing for the same spots again.
